5 of the Best Long Hikes Near North Tahoe

The scenery in Lake Tahoe can’t be beat, but if you really want to soak up your surroundings while you’re in the area, a long, hard hike is the way to go. With so many miles of coastline and so many easily-accessible mountains cradling the lake, there’s plenty of beautiful sights to enjoy and leg-busting routes to conquer while you’re visiting the North Lake Tahoe area.

Whether you’re looking for an easy lap around the lake or a mountain-top trail that’ll take you to new heights, there’s plenty to find in North Tahoe. Join us as we explore 5 of the best hikes over 4 miles around Lake Tahoe.

#1: Day Hike Parts of the Tahoe Rim Trail near Carnelian Bay

The Tahoe Rim Trail covers 165 total miles, circling around the ridges that overlook the Tahoe Basin. Completed in 2001, it was originally envisioned by Glen Hampton, a US Forest Service officer. Although it can be hiked all in one go as a backpacking excursion, the Rim Trail can also be broken up into day hikes that total anywhere from 5 to 20 miles.

Nearest to Carnelian Bay, you’ll find a hike that meets up with the Tahoe Rim Trail–and also with Hello Kitty and the Watson Creek. This 6.5-mile loop provides endless views, along with a chance to say you hiked part of the Tahoe Rim Trail during your visit. Be sure to fuel up before you go–with 1,135 feet of elevation gain throughout this hike, you’ll need some energy for the ascents.

#2: Climb a Mountain on the Mount Rose Peak Trail near Incline Village

For those of you that really want to stretch out your leg muscles and say you ascended a mountain peak during your trip to North Tahoe, the 10.7-mile Mount Rose Peak Trail might just scratch that itch. Located just off of Mount Rose Highway, this route traverses lakes and waterfalls, before finally giving you the chance to see the whole of the landscape at a glance once you get near the top of the trail.

This is not an easy hike, so don’t come unprepared. Give yourself some time to acclimate to the altitude before you attempt it, as you’ll be reaching the summit elevation of 8,900 feet. Once there, however, you’ll be aptly rewarded with unparalleled views of the Lake Tahoe Basin and a profound sense of accomplishment.

#3: Take an Easy Stroll the Beaches on the Tahoe East Shore Trail

For those of you who aren’t sure that a leg-busting mountain ascent is the right hike for you, why not take an easy stroll along the Tahoe East Shore Trail? This paved trail stretches from Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park, and it’s perfect for an easy jaunt with some incredible lake views. The entire route totals 5.2 miles, but with much less of the elevation gain of the other hikes on this list.

Be sure to always keep an eye out for other hikers and bikers while on the trail–this is a popular one due to its accessibility.

#4: Hike to Marlette Lake from the Chimney Beach Trailhead near Incline Village

There’s nothing better than taking a hike on a well-maintained trail that provides incredible views, and our next recommendation perfectly fits that description. Located about five miles south of Incline Village on Route 28, the 8.6-mile Marlette Lake loop will take you from the shores of Tahoe into the mountains, where you’ll find another majestic lake to land your gaze on.

Although there are some steep ascents during the first 1.5 miles of this trail, it shouldn’t pose much of an obstacle for a hiker who wants to challenge their leg muscles. Be aware that there is an elevation gain of 2,135 feet along the entirety of the hike, so fuel up for those rocky switchbacks for a rewarding view of Marlette Lake at the end.

#5: Enjoy Five Lakes on this Trail Near Olympic Valley

The summertime is when hiking is at its best in North Lake Tahoe, and our final hike of the list is one that is best hiked in the midst of the warm summer months.

Found in the beautiful Chief Wilderness near Olympic Valley, the Five Lakes Trail is a 4.8-mile route that will give you a chance to experience the flora and fauna of California’s mountains. And although there is a bit of an elevation gain (about 1,100 feet total), most hikers say that this is one of the easiest and most accessible wilderness routes in the area. Best of all, during the summertime you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of five different alpine lakes and fields filled to the brim with wildflower blooms to admire.
